Inflation is down!

This week brought good news for hardworking American families. Inflation is down, sitting below pre-pandemic levels at 1.1%. Yesterday, we learned annual consumer inflation has fallen by more than half over the last 11 months. You deserve some more breathing room – and that’s why I’ll keep voting to lower costs for families and invest in America.

We’ve accomplished a lot already – we’ve lowered the cost of prescription drugs, including by capping the price of insulin at $35 a month, invested in manufacturing jobs, and lowered energy bills by investing in clean energy. It’s all thanks to common sense legislation like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act, all of which I was proud to support.

Curious about how these investments are paying off? Head to invest.gov to break down President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda. Here are a couple highlights from Indiana:

-$12 billion in manufacturing commitments

-$3.5 billion to rebuild infrastructure

-$182.1 million in home energy rebates to help Hoosiers save money on their energy bills

-1 million seniors who will save money on prescription drug costs

This is encouraging news, but make no mistake: I won’t stop fighting to lower costs even more and make life easier for middle class families.

Legislation Alert: Safety Net Protection Act

Last week, a new Supreme Court decision – Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County v. Talevski – was a welcome sign for countless families who rely on social safety net programs to survive. The decision, written by Justice Jackson, affirms the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals decision and makes clear our Congressional intent was to provide a remedy and a legal right of action when individuals have been mistreated.

In other words, it affirmed that if you benefit from a federal social safety net program like Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, TANF, or more and have been denied the services you were promised, you deserve the same right to legal action as everybody else.
This case originated in my district in Indianapolis, but its effects are far-reaching for low-income families across the United States. I will soon be introducing the Safety Net Protection Act, which will codify the Supreme Court’s decision and ensure everyone – regardless of income – can exercise their legal rights without burdensome red tape.

Congressional App Challenge:

Calling all middle school and high school students and future tech leaders! The 2023 Congressional App Challenge is open now through November 1st. This national public competition established by the US House of Representatives encourages kids to learn how to code, celebrates the ingenuity of our young people, and reinforces the importance of STEM education.

Indiana District 7 has countless young leaders who represent the future of STEM and the future of our economy. To find out more about the competition, visit my website here.

Success story of the week:

“There was an issue with initial passport application approval. Kathy Souchet-Downey, Immigration Liaison and Latino Outreach Coordinator at the Office of Congressman André Carson, serves as a desirable model reflective of the collective mission and position that Carson strives to be in areas of dedicated service, honest leadership, and common sense
solution. I am grateful and more confident with knowing that Andre Carson and his district team care about community and protect the interest of the community residents in which they serve.”
