Investing in America.
Democrats’ Investing in America agenda is paying off for thousands of hardworking families.
Thanks to legislation we passed when Democrats last held the majority, middle class Americans are benefitting from cost savings. Unfortunately, partisan politics and in-fighting has created a standstill in Congress this year.
We have so much more work to do, but it’s important to acknowledge the programs that are making an impact right now so we can continue to invest in progress and invest in America.
Here’s how Democrats’ legislation has impacted families in Indianapolis:
Lowering the cost of healthcare:
President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act in 2010 under the basic principle that everyone should be able to afford quality health insurance. Since then, I’ve supported bills that continue to build on this historic moment and lower the cost of healthcare – and it’s working.
My district has seen a 208% increase in enrollments in the Affordable Care Act since 2020. That’s in large part due to more cost savings than ever – I voted for legislation that will help the average enrollee save $590 a month.
On top of that, we’re lowering the cost of prescription drugs. One of our biggest accomplishments? Capping the price of insulin for seniors on Medicare at $35/month thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, which I proudly championed. In our district, 3,700 Medicare beneficiaries are saving an average of $510 annually compared to 2020 prices. And it’s just the start – Indianapolis-based Eli Lily announced they are lowering the cost of insulin driven by momentum from the Inflation Reduction Act. No one in our country should go without lifesaving medication simply because they can’t afford it.
And we won’t stop there. The Federal Trade Commission recently announced it is reviewing and revising processes for drug product patents, including inhalers, to help curb prices and increase competition. That means the more than 27 million people with asthma in our country won’t pay more than $35 for inhalers. We’re giving Americans more breathing room – literally.
Expanding Veteran benefits:
For decades, millions of Veterans have unknowingly been exposed to toxic substances and radiation during their military service.
As a result of the exposures, Veterans have had to face a range of serious health complications, including many types of cancers, cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological disorders, and other chronic illnesses. Although the severity of the health issues can vary, many Veterans have faced debilitating conditions that require ongoing medical care and support and can cause disability, reduced quality of life, and premature death.
Current estimates suggest that more than 5 million Veterans were exposed to toxic substances or radiation during their military service. That’s why I voted for the PACT Act to expand healthcare and disability benefits for multiple groups of Veterans. Survivors of Veterans are also now eligible to receive benefits that were previously unavailable to them.
Just as our Veterans made a commitment to serve our nation, we have a responsibility to serve them long after they take off the uniform. Now, thanks to Democrats, the PACT Act is ensuring our veterans have access to the lifesaving care they have earned. Veterans should visit www.VA.Gov/PACT or contact my office to learn more.
Success Story of the Week:
“I have contacted Congressman Carson's office twice in the past two years regarding
issues that I had with a federal agency and state affiliated agency. In both cases the staff at Congressman Carson's office responded to my initial inquiry within a very timely manner. Also, his staff followed up with me by phone to get all the facts regarding the issue. After getting all the facts, the issues were resolved in a very timely manner. The staff at Congressman Carson's office were very friendly, professional, effective, and a pleasure to work with. Congressman Carson and his staff have my continued support.”
