NEW: Congress’ First Staff Interfaith Space:
In America, no matter what, you should be able to practice your religion freely and openly.
Our country was founded on the basis of religious freedom. That means the freedom to attend whatever church, mosque, or synagogue you want, without discrimination. But it also means we need to make our country open and welcoming to all religions.
That’s why I’m proud to have secured Congress’ first-ever dedicated space for staff and interns of all faiths to engage in prayer and meditation. The Interfaith Staff Prayer Room opened today and is designed to accommodate all religions.
As one of just three Muslim members of Congress, I am driven by my own faith. And I know that a safe environment to practice that faith is crucial. People of different religions coming together has been shown to combat some of our society’s most pressing issues. Interfaith engagement has been shown to allow people of different faiths to understand each other and find that we have much more in common than we do differences. It’s important to work together on our shared goals and values – not only do we get more done when we work together, but we also promote a world that is more tolerant and peaceful.
I’ll continue to promote the values of tolerance and understanding. Everyone deserves a safe space to practice their religious freedom, and I’ll never stop defending that right.
Water Resources Development Act of 2024:
We rely on our water systems every day for our health and our economy, and it’s critical that we protect and manage our water supply infrastructure. This week, I voted to advance the Water Resources Development Act of 2024 to grow the economy, create jobs, and improve supply chains. Projects authorized in this bill will protect families and businesses from floods – the most common and costly natural hazard in the United States. It will also upgrade our ports and harbors, which play a crucial role in global trade, transportation, and economic development. In my senior role on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I’ll keep fighting to make sure our water systems are strong, effective, and efficient.
