Protecting you from extreme weather.

If it seems like we’ve been experiencing more bouts of extreme weather, that’s because we have.

Extreme weather events have increased significantly in recent years – in the number of storms, their intensity, and damage. This is in large part the result of human-caused climate change. Just this week, severe storms caused damage across Indiana, with at least two tornadoes confirmed. 2023 was Indiana’s hottest year on record “by a long shot.” And Hurricane Helene has placed 32 million people in Florida under flood watches, with storm surges expected from 8 to 12 feet above sea level in some places, before this storm travels north towards us.

Extreme weather events put our communities at risk. There are two main ways we can address these increasing threats.

We must address climate change. That’s why I voted for the Inflation Reduction Act, the most significant action Congress has taken on clean energy and climate change in our nation’s history. It helps save families money on their energy bills now while working to deploy clean energy – and new clean energy jobs – as well as clean vehicles, buildings, and manufacturing. It also advances President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative, which commits to delivering 40 percent of the overall clean energy and climate change benefits to disadvantaged communities – which are typically hit harder by the negative impacts of climate change.

I also voted for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which established the Carbon Reduction Program. In Indiana, that means we’re supporting efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, especially in transportation, and keep our roads and highways cleaner and safer.

While we address climate change, we are also fighting to ensure every household has what they need to react to extreme weather conditions, if and when they occur. It’s important to be prepared, which is why I helped advance the Extreme Weather and Heat Response Modernization Act out of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee just last week. This bill would establish programs to mitigate the impact of extreme heat, particularly by keeping you safe, healthy, and cool during these extreme events.

Extreme weather can be scary – but I’ll always fight to keep you and your family safe.

Success Story of the Week:

We helped an Indianapolis resident on a decade-old VA claim. Here’s what he had to say:

“I had been put through multiple exams and given the run around for years…I had given up, but after Congressman Carson’s office received my information, they were on it, promptly checking in on my case specifically and providing updates. Maybe about 8 months later, finally after all these years a resolution was reached. I couldn’t even explain the feeling. The validation after so long. “
