Working Together to Revitalize Indy's Near Eastside This week, Congressman Carson attended the grand opening of the St. Clair Senior Apartments, just one of the many projects coming to fruition on the Near Eastside. This facility provides living space for seniors who might otherwise have to relocate from the neighborhoods they love. With easy access to the Boner Community Center's Senior Center and nearby health care and dental services, this new facility is a poignant reminder of the great work that can be done when government and private entities come together to address a community's needs. In just a few weeks, Indianapolis will be on the national stage as the city hosts Super Bowl XLVI. While the game itself is an extraordinary event, the impact of our Super Bowl bid - and the resulting local partnerships - have left an important mark on the City of Indianapolis. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Indy's Near Eastside. This once struggling 44-square-block area just one mile east of downtown is now making a notable comeback. Congressman Carson was able to work with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to deal with a longstanding federal lien that was holding up construction at the facility, threatening to derail the development. During her remarks, Katie Brett of the Indy East Asset Development stated that without Congressman Carson, St. Clair Senior Apartments would have never happened. This weekend, Congressman Carson will also be attending the grand opening and dedication of the CommonWealth Apartments. This facility is yet another example of what can be accomplished through public-private partnerships and highlights the great work being done on the Near Eastside. This facility, complete with community space, a gymnasium and rooftop youth sports area, will be one of the only diverse income properties in the city. The New York Times recently published an article that highlights many of the other projects the Super Bowl has sparked here in Indianapolis. You can check it out here. Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day So rare a leader, so unique a catalyst for change was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This coming Monday, we will honor and celebrate the life and legacy of this civil rights leader who forever changed the course of our nation. We will pay tribute to his tremendous leadership and his inspirational work, and we will reflect on his immortal dream. Even in the face of towering hatred, Dr. King regularly reminded us that change must come through civility and decency. It is a message that should continue to stir us to action. We should remember the words of Dr. King: "Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable. Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals." In Washington, in Indianapolis and around this great nation, we need to continue to dedicate ourselves to following the example of. Dr. King. Whether it is through political activism or volunteering in the community, it is incumbent upon all of us to continue to strive for a more perfect union. In doing so, we honor Dr. King's dream and legacy, each and every day. Thank you for reading the Carson Courier. Please do not hesitate to contact me with your thoughts and concerns.
