Seizing the Moment -- January 25, 2013

A Note from Congressman Carson

Dear Friend:
Just a few days ago, one million people came together on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to witness the 57th Presidential Inauguration. Amidst the pomp and circumstance, President Obama offered a powerful reflection, saying, "We are made for this moment, and we will seize it – so long as we seize it together."
I couldn't agree more. We have an immense responsibility in the 113th Congress to make each moment count - to strengthen our economy, create jobs, reduce our deficits, and pass legislation that makes life better for the American people. There is no time to waste.
In the coming weeks, we will debate sequestration, gun violence prevention, and legislation that seeks to fund our government. I am hopeful that we can all – Democrats and Republicans – work together and show the American people that they come before the political games and gimmicks. If you have any thoughts or concerns about the legislation before the U.S. House, please feel free to reply to this email and make your voice heard. As always, it's my great honor to serve you.
Best,
André
The Inside Scoop
Setting the Record Straight on "No Budget, No Pay" Bill
Congressman Carson this week voted against the House Republicans' plan to temporarily suspend the U.S. debt limit. Rather than pursuing a balanced and bipartisan budget agreement, House Republicans put forth legislation that will manufacture yet another fiscal crisis in just a matter of months, creating even greater uncertainty for small businesses and the global markets. Congress should commit to paying its bills on time and passing a long-term, clean debt limit increase.

Holocaust Remembrance Day
This Sunday marks the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a global day of commemoration that recognizes the liberation of the Aushwitz-Bierkenau Concentration Camp. On this day, people from all over the world will pause to honor the victims of the Nazi era and to work to develop educational programs to help prevent future genocides.
