Update from Congress.

I could not be more privileged to represent Hoosier families in Congress. I want to provide an update on Republican legislation that Donald Trump recently signed into law.

On July 4, Republicans in Congress celebrated as Donald Trump signed his “Big Beautiful Bill” into law.

This bill cuts Medicaid and food assistance while giving tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations — all while still adding $4 trillion to our national debt, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

It's important everyone understands the facts, and I encourage you to do your own research on the harm these cuts to Medicaid and food assistance will have on Indianapolis and our entire state. Here are the dangers of Donald Trump’s bill that I’m most concerned about:

  • Increases energy costs. The bill includes devastating cuts to clean energy that will cause families to pay an average of $400 more per year nationwide, according to Ways and Means Committee Democrats. Seniors and low-income people will also have an even harder time getting assistance to pay their energy bills, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

  • Kicks 17 million people off their health care and makes premiums, deductibles, and copays soar for millions more. The bill cuts more than $1 trillion from health care, including the largest Medicaid cut in history. Plus, it will cause a $500 billion cut to Medicare, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office – the program nearly 1 million Hoosiers rely on.

  • Makes the largest cut to nutritional assistance ever. The bill cuts SNAP by 20 percent, and forces states to cover more of SNAP’s cost, potentially leading to dozens of states eliminating SNAP entirely. Red tape requirements will cause 5 million people to lose food assistance and put tens of millions of kids at risk of losing school breakfast and lunch, according to the Agriculture Committee Democrats. Indiana Capital Chronicle reports that Indiana could “pay millions more to administer food programming.”

  • Kills more than a million jobs. The bill includes devastating cuts to clean energy which will cost more than 840,000 jobs in just the next 5 years and an additional 790,000 jobs over the next 10 years, according to Ways and Means Committee Democrats.

  • Weakens our public schools and make higher education more expensive. The bill creates a permanent, unlimited tax credit for private school vouchers that undermine our public schools and attacks protections for student borrowers, according to Education and Workforce Committee Democrats.

  • Defunds Planned Parenthood. The bill eliminates funding for a vital health care provider that ensures millions of women across America can get basic health care, including routine visits and cancer screenings.

  • Adds $4 trillion to the debt. This includes $700 billion in interest payments alone, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. It will cause our debt to rise to as much as 128 percent of our GDP by 2034, threatening to bankrupt our country and mortgaging our children’s futures.

  • And it does all of this only to give nearly a trillion dollars of tax cuts to the top 1%. This bill is a reverse Robin Hood — transferring money from the poorest to the wealthiest. People making over $1 million will have an average tax cut of at least $80,000 a year, while the bottom 20% of families will see their taxes rise, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

Reading off these harms, you might ask yourself: Why would anyone vote for a bill that kicks millions off earned benefits and blows up our national debt all to reward rich donors?

I was proud to vote NO on Donald Trump’s Big Ugly Bill. I wish my colleagues could say the same.

I want to know how you feel about Trump's Big, Ugly Bill. Do you support this legislation?

How will this bill impact you?
