What Labor Day is all about.
While Labor Day is considered a welcome day off and a transition from summer to fall, it’s important to remember what the day represents: the importance of the American worker.
The labor movement was instrumental in advocating for livable wages, safety standards, employee healthcare and benefits, and more. I’m proud of the work we’ve done to build on that movement and advance the cause of workers’ rights over the last two years under President Biden.
This week, I was proud to visit SMART Local 20 in Indianapolis with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler to talk about how we can continue to support and uplift unions. With the unprecedented investments in America’s roads, bridges, rail, transit, and more through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we must also have a strong workforce. Through their apprenticeship program, SMART is preparing the next generation of workers to meet the demands of the 21st century. Steel has long been integral to our state’s economy, and I’ll continue to grow and strengthen this vital industry.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is the largest federal investment in our nation’s crumbling infrastructure in history, plus it includes provisions to empower those who will build our nation’s future. By expanding wage labor standards, we are ensuring that we can grow the middle class while we grow America’s infrastructure.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law also will lead us into the next era of clean energy, creating sustainable jobs and a sustainable future. I’ll keep working to ensure we expand good-paying, union jobs in this expanding new industry.
Without unions, we would not have eight-hour days, five-day weeks, or countless other accomplishments. Today and every day, I stand in solidarity with all workers and labor activists. You represent what makes our country truly great.
