America Needs Affordable Housing.

Housing costs are crushing families across America. Whether you're trying to buy your first home, find an affordable apartment, or keep a roof over your family's head, housing has become too expensive.

Last week, Democrats and Republicans came together to pass common sense reform to address the housing crisis with the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act—a bill to make housing more affordable by creating more housing to meet increasing demand, and drive costs down. It also would increase housing for veterans and address homelessness. It passed the House 358-32 and the Senate 85-5.

Then it hit a snag.

Instead of signing it into law, President Trump canceled the bill signing ceremony just before it was scheduled to begin.

Why? Because he's holding this bipartisan housing bill hostage until Congress passes an unrelated voting bill, the SAVE Act.

I've consistently opposed the SAVE Act because I believe it would make it harder for eligible Americans to vote—including many married women who changed their last names. We should be expanding access to the ballot box, but instead this bill creates new barriers.

American families do not need more restrictive voting laws. Families need homes. Veterans need housing. Communities need more affordable places to live.
