Get help on your utility bill.

Utility bills are too high. This week AES announced it will be acquired by a private company, a deal that could make utility costs even worse and that I strongly oppose.

That’s why I’m hosting a Utility Assistance Fair on Saturday, April 11 to make sure Indianapolis residents have the resources they need to tackle high utility costs. We’ll help with past-due bills, financial assistance applications, and navigating other community resources. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged – sign up here.

In the meantime, if you’re a Marion County resident, you can apply for direct utility assistance with the federally funded Indy Energy Assistance Program (IndyEAP) at IndyEAP.org.

I’m also making sure Indianapolis residents know their rights when it comes to utilities, including:

  • Landlords must provide heat in cold temperatures. If you are experiencing an issue, contact the Health Department at (317) 221-2150.
  • IndyEAP applicants are protected against electric and heat disconnects, so visit IndyEAP.org to see if you qualify.
  • For immediate help and access to essential community resources, dial 2-1-1 or 1-866-211-9966.

I’ve been fighting to lower utility costs in Congress, and under Democratic leadership, we made progress. I passed a bill that lowered utility costs with energy efficiency tax credits, grid modernization, and solar panel incentives.

But Donald Trump’s policies are putting corporate profits ahead of people – and families are suffering as a result.

Last year, President Trump signed a bill into law repealing Democrats’ clean energy tax credits that saved Hoosiers money. I voted against this disastrous bill, which is estimated to increase household energy costs by $170 annually by 2035.

Plus, Trump’s chaotic tariff policies are creating uncertainty. Prices are going up across the board: Groceries. Housing. Healthcare. American pocketbooks are hurting.
