Here's what's happening in Congress.
Redistricting Update:
This week, I joined my Congressional Black Caucus colleagues to sound the alarm on mid-decade redistricting.
States like Texas, Missouri, and Ohio have been targeting minority voters – and now, Indiana is targeted by Trump’s plan to give himself more power by redrawing our congressional districts in his favor.
The 7th Congressional District in Indianapolis is a majority-minority district. 54% of the population is Black and Brown. The numbers don’t lie. We have a strong, beautifully diverse community.
Mid-decade redistricting should not happen unless ordered by a court, and this scheme is a clear attempt to dilute the voice of Black and Brown Americans. The strategy is clear. The racism is undeniable: target majority-minority districts and then whitewash them.
I’m fighting mid-decade redistricting. I’m fighting for fairness. I’m fighting for equality. I’m fighting to save our country.
BILL SPOTLIGHT: FEMA
In times of disaster, every dollar counts. Americans deserve full transparency when it comes to how disaster, recovery, and prevention dollars are being used. That’s why I’m proud to announce that my FEMA transparency amendment passed out of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee last week. My amendment requires the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to notify Congress within seven days of awarding any grants – so you know exactly how your tax dollars are being used.
It’s essential that we can track how resources are allocated and ensure they reach the communities in need. If FEMA refuses to provide this information, my amendment codifies the traditional notifications to Congress and ensures that all Members of Congress will get the details about FEMA grants for their communities.
As natural and man-made disasters become more frequent and severe, FEMA pre-disaster mitigation and resilience programs are more important than ever. These programs save lives and money—every $1 spent saves $6 in future disaster costs.
