I voted against funding ICE
This week, I voted against an appropriations bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security for Fiscal Year 2026 because it failed to stop the unlawful actions and abuses by ICE.
Liam Ramos, age 5, is being detained by ICE over a thousand miles away from his home. At least 3,800 children have been taken into ICE custody in the last year – including approximately 20 infants. Renee Good’s widow and children are mourning the unimaginable loss after her murder. A 10-year-old girl with brain cancer was deported to Mexico, without the lifesaving treatment she needs.
And just today, ICE shot a Minnesota man on the ground point blank.
This is the direct result of the Trump administration's cruel policies and its disregard for human life.
ICE has been deliberately turned into our generation’s Gestapo, an agency with near unlimited, unchecked authority to carry out unlawful orders.
I voted against this week’s bill because it continues to fund ICE without any substantive changes to stop unlawful actions and abuse of power.
Since President Trump’s first term, I have fought the administration’s baseless attacks on the immigrant community by supporting constructive legislation like the Neighbors Not Enemies Act and the NO BAN Act.
This administration has escalated attacks into a violent reign of terror, which is why I voted against this bill, and why I’m supporting the impeachment of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
There is no justification for the trauma ICE and this administration have caused. The unchecked physical and psychological trauma heaped on our communities must end. There is no defense. It is not moral or lawful – it’s cruel.
A vote for this bill was a vote allowing more abuse from ICE. I will not rubber stamp this administration’s lawless assault on our communities. Next week, the Senate has the chance to join me in voting against this bill.
