Protecting voting rights.
Last week, I voted against threats to our right to vote.
The Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act actually does nothing to make our elections better.
The SAVE Act:
- Forces Americans to present a passport or birth certificate in person just to register to vote or update their registration.
- Requires more time and money for documents most people don’t have readily available, and that can take weeks or months. For young people, working families, seniors on fixed incomes and limited mobility, this is a real barrier.
- Particularly impacts Black, Latino, Native American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander voters. Nearly half of Americans do not have a passport, and two-thirds of Black Americans don’t have a passport.
- Will disenfranchise 69 million women in the United States who changed their last names after marriage, and whose names on their birth certificates do not match their REAL IDs.
- Carves out an exception for members of the military – but not military spouses.
Proponents of the SAVE Act claim a threat of non-citizen voting, but evidence shows overwhelmingly it’s a nonexistent threat. There is no widespread fraud. But there is a hyper partisan surge of threats against our right to vote by stripping away more and more of the Voting Rights Act.
Report after report demonstrates that voter fraud is a non-issue. This is a manufactured emergency by the Republican Party – designed to restrict the voice of lawful American voters.
Non-citizens voting is already illegal. Republicans want the American public to believe non-citizens are the enemy. They want Americans to believe immigrants are stealing votes, committing crimes, and making our country worse – and that’s just not true. It’s Republicans’ harmful policies that continue to make life worse for ordinary families.
