What to know about flood assistance.
Indianapolis is still dealing with the aftermath of historic flooding. My heart goes out to the families and neighbors of those who lost their lives or suffered injuries in this disaster. We’ve seen damage to homes, streets, and personal property, but we’ve also seen our community rise up to do what we do best – coming together in times of crisis to help those in need.
As our community prepares for the long path ahead for recovery, here’s what you need to know:
Call 211 to report all storm-related damage: Local and state governments need to document the extent of the damage – in real time and as soon as it becomes known. This information helps determine how much federal assistance is needed. As soon as you see damage – whether it’s in your home, neighborhood, or elsewhere in the community – report it by calling 211.
Some individual assistance is available: The State of Indiana has activated its Disaster Relief Fund which could provide up to $5,000 in emergency aid grants per household for basics like clothing, food, and shelter while families are displaced from their homes. You can learn if you qualify for this state grant funding by calling 211.
Importance of federal emergency declarations: The White House approved the State of Indiana’s request for an emergency declaration. This is a required step to make federal public assistance available to state and local governments, including Marion County. The state also just submitted an additional disaster declaration request that includes provisions for individual assistance. If Marion County is designated for individual assistance, eligible homeowners and renters could receive assistance for temporary housing, home repairs, personal property losses, medical expenses, and vehicle damage.
As we assess the full damage and determine recovery and repair needs, the state may submit an additional or amended disaster application. I joined every Member of Congress from Indiana in supporting these requests and calling for more resources for our state. I will continue working to ensure Indianapolis gets its fair share of state funding.
Importance of funding FEMA: The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is the federal agency responsible for providing these funds in the wake of a disaster. I’ve long supported fully funding and strengthening FEMA – just last September, my amendment to improve FEMA grant programs passed the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in our FEMA Reform Act of 2025. This bill improves disaster response and recovery programs – the same programs Indiana is now relying on. Today, we’re seeing just how important a strong, well-funded FEMA is.
