Carson Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

September 14, 2008

Washington, D.C. – Congressman André Carson released the following statement today to commemorate the upcoming Hispanic Heritage Month, an observance month to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture:

"Hispanic Heritage Month provides us all with an excellent opportunity to celebrate the many contributions made by those individuals in the Latino community. As one of America's fastest growing populations, Latinos have played vital roles in advancing our nation's cultural values, economic priorities and democratic principles.

"America has achieved a high level standing and enjoyed many successes because of the selfless and patriotic deeds made by so many in the Latino community. Whether it is serving in our nation's military, advancing an economic venture, or serving in elected office, Latinos have helped propel our country forward.

"Appreciating our nation's expansive ethnic diversity and fully understanding the importance of cooperative inter-cultural dialogues are but a few of the many important values that Hispanic Heritage Month bestows upon our populace. Acceptance of core values such as these makes us better citizens and a more tolerant society."
