Carson Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today Congressman André Carson issued the following statement in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 through October 15 every year.

"During Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor the Hispanic community and pay tribute to the extraordinary contributions that they make to America every day.

"Over several generations, American life has been enriched by Hispanic contributions in business, education, government and the arts. As the fastest growing ethnic group in our country, the 48.4 million-strong Hispanic community is a vital part of our nation not only culturally, but economically as well.

"Like all Americans, Hispanics families have been hit hard by this economy. That's why I have been working with my colleagues in Congress to pass legislation that helps put people back to work. This past summer the House passed a small business lending bill that included language I authored to increase opportunities for minority- and women-owned businesses. With 2.3 million Hispanic-owned small businesses in this country, it's important that they receive the support they need to actively participate in our recovery to continue moving our economy forward.

"From improving the economy and passing historic health care reform, to making college more affordable, we must do all we can to better ensure that all Hispanics, like all Americans, have a meaningful opportunity to pursue the American Dream."
