Carson: Indy Secures COPS Grant Worth $11 Million

Washington, D.C. – Indianapolis will be able to bolster its police force after receiving an $11 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice through the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program, Congressman André Carson announced today. The grant provides funding for 50 new police officers.
Today's announcement is part of a national rollout of COPS grants made available to more than 1,000 law enforcement agencies across the country through the landmark American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The $1 billion program will fund the hiring and rehiring of 4,699 law enforcement officers.
"We cannot let our commitment to public safety slip during this economic downturn," said Congressman André Carson.
"This COPS grant will provide Indianapolis with the resources it needs to invest in public safety and add police to our streets, and in the process, show criminals that they cannot take advantage of these tough fiscal times to wreak havoc on our neighborhoods."
The COPS grant will provide 100 percent of the approved salary and benefits for entry level officer positions over a three year period. Police departments receiving the grants will then be required to retain the grant-funded positions for a fourth year.
