Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Carson issued the following statement after the Senate confirmed Judge Sonia Sotomayor to be the next Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court by a vote of 68 to 31:

"Today, the Senate made history by confirming Judge Sotomayor to replace retiring Justice David Souter, making her the first Hispanic American and only the third woman to sit on the Supreme Court.

"I was extremely pleased to see a bipartisan effort to confirm one of America's foremost legal scholars.  Through her years of service as federal prosecutor, private sector attorney and member of the federal District Court and Court of Appeals, Judge Sotomayor developed the diverse experience and expert knowledge of our legal system that will allow her to adeptly address some of the most difficult issues facing the American people.  I have no doubt that she will serve in the best traditions of our nation's highest court.

"So today, I offer my most sincere congratulations to Judge Sotomayor and her family as she prepares to be sworn in as the next Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The American legal system and the people of this great nation will be well-served by this experienced, thoughtful leader."
