CARSON REACTION TO WHITE HOUSE BUDGET PROPOSAL

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman André Carson released the following statement today in reaction to the White House budget proposal released for Fiscal Year 2012.

"In order for America's economic future to be truly successful, we must strike a balance that makes strategic investments in our future while making cuts that rein in our budget deficit.

"There are several points in the President's budget proposal that builds upon the progress we have made over the past 11 months. I support the President's call for investments in education, a comprehensive transportation plan and a next-generation, wireless broadband network, as these initiatives will help create much needed infrastructure. There also can be bipartisan agreement with this proposal as it freezes discretionary spending for five years and cuts billions from the Pentagon's spending plan.

"But, I have concerns that several other proposed cuts will negatively impact Hoosiers across the 7th Congressional District. Programs like Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) improve neighborhoods and create jobs. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps protect some of our most vulnerable citizens in their time of need. I understand that tough choices will have to be made in solving our deficit problem, but we must also continue to fund vital programs that spur growth in our communities as well as help those who are most in need.

"I believe that the President's proposed budget is a good starting point to this important discussion on our country's priorities."
