Carson, State Leaders to Announce Initiative Aimed Better Protecting Domestic Violence

CARSON, STATE LEADERS TO ANNOUNCE INITIATIVE AIMED AT BETTER PROTECTING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS

INDIANAPOLIS - In an effort to continue improving protections for victims of domestic violence, Congressman André Carson and Indiana Chief Justice Randall T. Shepard will announce a series of enhancements to the Protective Order Registry on Friday.

The communication system, known as the Protective Order Registry, allows local, state and national law enforcement to be notified when a protective order has been filed with the court. The upgrades are supported through federal funding and include new tools to instantly notify domestic violence victims when protective orders are served against their alleged abuser.

According to victim advocates, knowing when an order is served is critical to protecting the safety of victims. Too often, retribution attacks against the abuse victim occur once the assailant is notified of the order.

A domestic abuse survivor, anti-violence advocates, Justice Frank Sullivan, Jr., and Attorney General Greg Zoeller will join Chief Justice Shepard and Congressman Carson for the announcement.
