CARSON STATEMENT ON 2011 BUDGET DEAL

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman André Carson released the following statement today on the continuing resolution that funds the federal government for the rest of the fiscal year.

"The federal government avoided a shutdown last week after President Obama and leaders in Congress reached an agreement. Although I am pleased to end the weeks of uncertainty caused by temporary-spending bills, I voted against the continuing resolution because it comes at too steep a cost. This legislation jeopardizes the heath and safety of Hoosiers and their families by cutting $600 million from community health care centers, $950 million from community development and $296 million from the COPS program which provides funding to put more police on our streets.

"As we begin debating next year's budget, I am concerned with the Republicans' extreme policies that benefit the wealthy, end Medicare as we know it and shift costs to seniors. We must reduce our deficit responsibly without placing the burden on the backs of our most vulnerable citizens."
