Carson Statement on Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Washington, D.C. – "Domestic violence crimes are reprehensible acts and grotesquely inhumane offensives that adversely affect thousands of defenseless adults and innocent children every year. Beyond the physical injuries and psychological distress, domestic violence destabilizes families and impairs the healthy development of our children.
"Since domestic violence often occurs within the isolation of one's home, a significant number of these abuses go unreported contributing to the cyclical nature of the crime. For example, children who are victims of domestic violence as adolescents are twice as likely to commit similar offenses as adults.
"During the month of October, it is imperative that we renew our commitment to aggressively fighting those atrocities associated with domestic violence. By doing so, we better ensure that our children and the generations that follow have peaceful upbringings and productive childhoods."
