CARSON STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT OBAMA'S STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman André Carson released the following statement in response to President Obama's State of the Union address:
"Tonight President Obama acknowledged the progress that our country has made while also keeping his focus firmly on the future.
"Our nation has indeed come a long way since the lowest points of the recession. Through legislative achievements like the new health care law, Wall Street reform, and unprecedented investments in job creation and economic expansion, more than a million private sector jobs were created last year. The actions that have been taken by the President and Democrats in Congress not only stopped the economic free fall- it laid the foundation for a sustainable and competitive 21st Century economy.
"But the economic growth we have experienced is still not happening as fast as we would like. Far too many Hoosier families are still struggling, and we must continue to focus on putting people back to work.
"The President made it clear tonight that as we solve the challenges of today, we must not lose sight of our responsibilities for tomorrow. In order for the United States to remain a global economic leader, we must fuel the imagination of our people to resolve the economic issues that are facing our families and communities. The American people are expecting both parties to put petty, political differences aside to work together to create jobs and continue our nation's economic progress in a way that is fiscally responsible.
"I hope my colleagues on the Republican side recognize that leadership is more than just slashing spending. It's also recognizing the importance of making investments in areas that are crucial to keeping the United States at the forefront. The President has committed to cutting the deficit as well as improving resources for infrastructure, education and research. This approach is bold, necessary and one that I support."
