Carson Votes to Pass Long-Term Highway Bill
WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman André Carson released the following statement after voting to pass a long-term, six year federal highway bill out of committee today.
"Indiana is the Crossroads of America. Our roads, bridges and highways not only help support our national economy, they support countless Hoosier jobs by transporting goods and services produced across our state. That's why today I supported a six-year federal highway bill that puts in place policies to improve our nation's infrastructure and provide funds for Indiana's roads.
"According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, nearly 65% of America's roads are rated as being in less than good condition and 25% of bridges need to be replaced. In Marion County that percentage is even higher – 38%.
"While today's bill is far from perfect, I'm grateful for the certainty that it will provide to state and local governments that are looking to plan and build future projects.
"As the Ranking Member of the Emergency Management Subcommittee, I am pleased that three of my amendments were considered in bill:
- Allowing a uniform standard under federal law to ensure that fire trucks and other heavy emergency vehicles are exempt from axle weight rules allowing them to save time and money (approved)
- Correcting the Federal Aid-Highway Program goals to ensure economically distressed urban communities are not left behind (approved)
- Fixing the funding formula so that states like Indiana are treated more equitably. For too long, Hoosier taxpayers have provided millions of dollars to roads in other states without a guarantee of a fair return. (not approved)
"I look forward to working with my colleagues to get this legislation signed into law."
