Carson’s Rios ATF Bill Passes House

May 10, 2016

Legislation honors fallen agent during National Police Week

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the House of Representatives approved a bill introduced by Rep. André Carson (IN-07) to name the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Headquarters in Washington as the Ariel Rios Federal Building. The bill overwhelmingly passed by a vote of 401-0.

ATF agent Rios, 28, was murdered by drug traffickers in 1982. He was the first ATF agent killed by hostile action.

“It is fitting that the House is considering this legislation during National Police Week. This is an annual event when thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world travel to Washington, DC to participate in events honoring those killed in the line of duty. By naming the ATF headquarters after Ariel Rios, a front line law enforcement officer, we offer a very public tribute and commemoration of the sacrifices that too many officers have made.”

This remedy is overdue, considering the old ATF headquarters was named after Rios in 1985. In 2007, when ATF moved to a more secure location, Congress never named the new building after the fallen agent.

I look forward to the Senate passing this bill very soon.
