INDIANAPOLIS- Congressman André Carson today issued the following statement praising President Obama for establishing a bipartisan commission on fiscal responsibility:

"People across this nation have always been forced to make tough choices when it comes to their family or personal budgets. All the while Washington has seen massive deficits grow as difficult decisions are put off year-after-year.

"We cannot continue to simply ‘kick the can down the road.' The time for action from leaders on both sides of the aisle is long past due. That's why I am so pleased President Obama has taken this important step of creating a bipartisan commission on fiscal responsibility. It will take ideas, commitment and action from Republicans and Democrats alike to get our fiscal house in order-and this commission is a solid building block to accomplish this.

"Already, President Obama has taken the critical step of signing into law the pay-go bill that originated in the House. This legislation will restore the same budgeting principles that were in place during the Clinton administration in the 1990s-resulting in record deficits being transformed into record surpluses.

"I look forward to working with the President and the members of the fiscal responsibility commission to not only create ideas, but follow through on them to ensure action is taken and tough decisions are made."
