Congressman Carson establishes Congress’ first-ever staff interfaith space

June 27, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Congressman André Carson (IN-07) announced Congress’ first-ever dedicated staff interfaith space. This space was established through the Carson amendment to the Fiscal Year 2022 Legislative Branch Appropriations bill and was led by Congressman Carson, with co-lead Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10).

The Interfaith Staff Prayer Room is available for staff and interns of all faiths to engage in prayer and meditation. The room is designed to accommodate multiple faiths, and opened this week in Room 467 of the Cannon House Office Building.

“Every American should be able to practice their religion freely and openly,” said Congressman Carson. “Not only will this space accommodate the needs of the many diverse religions on Capitol Hill, it also encourages interfaith engagement – a key tenant to achieving a more peaceful, understanding community. We have much more in common than we do differences, and this space will reinforce that for decades of Congressional Members and staff.”

“I am thrilled that, for the first time, staff of all faiths on Capitol Hill will have a dedicated place to gather for prayer and meditation,” said Congressman Brad Schneider. “This is a notable moment for the home of our federal legislature and a reflection of the respect and honor we all deserve as we practice our individual faith traditions. I am grateful to partner with my colleague Rep. Carson to champion this important space for staff and I take great pride seeing it come to life.”
