Congressman Carson Introduces Budget Reconciliation Amendment to Protect Medicaid
May 20, 2025
WASHINGTON, DC—Today, Congressman André Carson (IN-07) introduced an amendment to Republicans’ budget reconciliation package to protect Medicaid and healthcare. This amendment is expected to be considered in the House Committee on Rules, which is scheduled to begin at 1:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.
“Despite Republican claims that they will not cut Medicare or Medicaid, the math just doesn’t add up,” said Congressman Carson. “A nonpartisan analysis confirms that the Republican budget simply would not be possible without slashing Medicaid and essential healthcare. They are trying to pull a fast one on the American public – but middle-class families understand how budgets work. They understand that to pay for something new, you have to make cuts to something else. In this instance, Republicans want to pay for $7 trillion in tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy – and they’re willing to take away healthcare from children, newborns, and postpartum mothers to pay for it.
“If the GOP wants to continue insisting that their bill won’t hurt Medicaid, then they can prove it in the bill itself, not just with words. If the GOP really is committed to protecting Medicaid, they will pass my amendment.”
The Carson amendment would ensure that “None of the provisions of the bill shall take effect if any of the provisions result in an increase in mortality rates and reduced access to health care services.”
The current budget reconciliation package is estimated to rip healthcare away from over 14 million people. In Indiana, 36.7% of all children, 41% of moms giving birth and their newborn babies, 44% of working-age adults with disabilities, 66% of people living in nursing homes, 17% of Medicare beneficiaries, and 17.1% of adults aged 19-64 rely on Medicaid for health coverage.
