INDIANAPOLIS – Congressman André Carson issued the following statement about the passing of Senator Edward Kennedy:
"I was deeply saddened this morning to learn of the passing of Sen. Ted Kennedy. My heart goes out to the entire Kennedy family on this solemn occasion.
"Our country has lost one of its greatest public servants and statesmen. The legendary Lion of the Senate was a fighter for the poor and disadvantaged across this nation, always using his tremendous influence and political savvy to be strong voice for the voiceless.
"For nearly half a century, Senator Kennedy left his indelible mark on virtually every piece of major legislation that moved this country forward. Whether it was advancing economic opportunity for working Americans, expanding civil rights for all, or fighting for improved access to health care for seniors and the needy, Senator Kennedy led the charge and delivered for the American people.
"In this time of an increasingly partisan tone coming from Washington, it's important to note that Senator Kennedy's success came from his ability to work across the political aisle. He was a tough negotiator and a master of the legislative process, but he was widely loved and respected by Democrats and Republicans alike. Senator Kennedy got things done by working with and winning over opponents, not tearing them down.
"After being diagnosed with the brain tumor that took his life, Senator Kennedy wisely said:
‘We know the future will outlast all of us, but I believe that all of us will live on in the future we make.'
"Senator Kennedy will live on in the future of this great nation that he has helped make."
