Congressman Carson Statement Recognizing Juneteenth

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman André Carson (IN-7) released today the following statement commemorating the celebration of Juneteenth:

On this day, June 19th, 148 years ago, the declaration that "all men are created equal" rang truer than ever before. From a small balcony in Galveston, Texas, Union General Gordon Granger stated unequivocally that all slaves were free. Though the promise of freedom had been proclaimed two years earlier, it was not fully realized until that historic summer day.

We join together in commemoration of this occasion to remind ourselves that the journey to freedom has been long and arduous, but that our nation and her people have always found a way to build a more perfect union. It is the story of our past that defines the promise of our future, and as we pursue all that we can be as a nation, we remember those who have fought for freedom every step of the way.
