House Approves Legislation Extending Homebuyer Tax Credit to Veterans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Carson issued the following statement after voting to pass H.R. 3590, the Service Members Home Ownership Tax Act, which will extend the first-time homebuyer tax credit to thousands of returning service members. Without this legislation, this credit would have expired at the end of the year, preventing currently deployed troops from using it when they return home.
"In these difficult economic times, our deployed service men and women are facing the dual stresses of war and recession—fighting terrorism abroad while their families at home struggle through one of the worst economic downturns in the nation's history. For many of these service members, the dream of homeownership has seemed far from reach.
"America's men and women in uniform serve our nation courageously, and I believe that Congress has a responsibility to provide them with the resources they need to successfully transition back to life at home. This bill does just that, by ensuring that service members deployed abroad have access to the $8,000 first-time homebuyer tax credit, even if their tour of duty extends into next year."
