Indiana Ranks Among Top 10 for New Hires
INDIANAPOLIS - A federal tax incentive program has put Indiana among the top ten states in the nation for new hires, Congressman André Carson said today.
Citing a recent report released by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Carson said nearly 173,000 Hoosiers have been hired over the last five months, setting up a number of Indiana companies to secure tax breaks for putting unemployed workers back on the job.
The tax incentives would come from the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act, which was passed into law earlier this year by Congress. The HIRE Act exempts employers from paying their 6.2 percent share of the Social Security payroll tax for the remainder of 2010 and provides a $1,000 tax credit to employers if they retain new workers for 52 weeks.
From February 2010 to June 2010, businesses hired 5.6 million new workers who had been unemployed for eight weeks or longer - making those businesses eligible to receive up to a projected $10.4 billion in HIRE Act tax exemptions and credits. Indiana ranked 10th in the nation with 172,703 new hires, just behind Michigan (185,163).
"The early success of the HIRE Act is welcome news for our economy," said Congressman Carson. "There are companies on the cusp of growth, and with these additional tax incentives, they're moving to hire people now--putting unemployed Hoosiers back to work and building momentum for our local economy."
The Central Indiana Job Fair, hosted by Carson in cooperation with Ivy Tech Community College, will take place Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at IUPUI's Campus Center in downtown Indianapolis.
From service-based jobs to skilled-trades positions to professional, high-wage jobs - the job fair will offer opportunities to learn more about employment across the economic spectrum.
There are still booths available for local companies looking to present at the job fair. Job seekers or employers wanting to participate can find more information on the Aug. 25 job fair by calling 317-921-4539 or visit www.ivytech.edu/carsonjobfair.
