Rep. Carson Elected as Ranking Member of T&I Economic Development Subcommittee

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. André Carson (IN-7) was elected today to serve as Ranking Member on the House Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Economic Development Subcommittee. He begins his new role immediately.

The Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management Subcommittee oversees economic development initiatives for urban and rural areas facing acute economic struggle, including programs administered by the Economic Development Administration, the Appalachian Regional Commission, the Delta Regional Authority and the Denali Commission. The subcommittee also addresses economic adjustment, including assistance to communities needing relief due to natural disasters and military base closures.

The subcommittee is also charged with the purchase, construction, repair, alteration, operation and maintenance of Federally owned or leased buildings and U.S. courthouses controlled by the General Services Administration, as well as matters relating to the Capitol Buildings, Senate and House Office Buildings, Botanic Gardens, Library of Congress, Smithsonian Institution and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The subcommittee also has oversight of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and federal management of emergencies and natural disasters, including disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.

Indiana's 7th Congressional District is home to a number of Federally owned or leased buildings, including locations at the Chase Tower, Market Tower, Market Square Center, BMO (M&I) Plaza, and the Indianapolis International Airport.

"I'm honored to continue the great work begun by Rep. Norton as Ranking Member of the Economic Development Subcommittee," said Rep. Carson. "My district and state are home to a significant number of federal facilities, and this new leadership role will allow me to play an active role in ensuring their effective oversight and management. Additionally, I look forward to revitalizing the subcommittee's focus on economic development, especially as it relates to some of our nation's more economically distressed urban and rural areas."

Congressman Carson went on to say, "My new work on the Economic Development Subcommittee will focus on the efficient use of federal properties and fighting wasteful spending; in these tight budgetary times, we need to make the most of the resources we already have. I am also looking forward to increasing the participation of small and disadvantaged businesses in managing federal properties and exploring new opportunities to utilize public-private partnerships to expand economic development."
