Statement from Congressman Carson on $7 million Youth CareerConnect award to Pike Township schools

April 7, 2014

INDIANAPOLIS – Congressman André Carson, D-Indianapolis, issued the following statement today congratulating Pike Township schools on a $7 million grant award from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Youth CareerConnect program.

Pike Township received one of the largest awards in the country. The district will use the grant to expand its career academies in advanced manufacturing and logistics, working in partnership with Conexus, an advanced manufacturing collaborative, and EmployIndy to provide work-based learning opportunities. The grant also will expand STEM opportunities in conjunction with the National Society of Black Engineers, Women in Technology, and the Indiana Girls Collaborative.

“This is an outstanding opportunity for Pike Township students and teachers that will strengthen the STEM talent pipeline in Indianapolis and help our young people learn the skills they need to compete in a global economy. I’m proud of the district, and I want to personally thank the U.S. Departments of Labor and Education for recognizing the incredible potential in our community.

The Youth CareerConnect program encourages America's school districts, institutions of higher education, the workforce investment system, and their partners to scale up evidence-based high school models that will transform the high school experience for America's youth.
