April 8, 2011

Dear Friend,

Thank you for reading another edition of my e-newsletter, the Carson Courier. For additional information on these and other topics, please visit my website at https://www.carson.house.gov.

In this week's Carson Courier:

  • Protecting the Housing Market
  • Preventing a Government Shutdown
  • The Butler Bulldogs Return to the Final Four

Protecting the Housing Market

This past Tuesday, Republican leadership in the Capital Markets subcommittee of the House Financial Services Committee attempted to push through eight bills aimed at either drastically changing or eliminating government-sponsored enterprises (GSE) like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. If enacted, such actions would destabilize an already anxious U.S. housing market, hurt our economic recovery and significantly disrupt long-standing efforts to increase access to affordable housing. While I acknowledge the need for reforming GSEs, current Republican proposals represent a piecemeal approach. Time is needed to develop a comprehensive strategy aimed at reforming Fannie and Freddie that does not disrupt our fragile housing market.

Preventing a Government Shutdown

After weeks of extensive debate on funding the federal government through Fiscal Year 2011 in order to prevent a government shutdown, Republicans continue to play political games that will disrupt our economic recovery and jeopardize the welfare of millions of our most vulnerable citizens. With the support of President Obama, my Democratic colleagues and I have offered a budget framework that cuts the same amount of spending as Republicans originally proposed. Instead of political posturing, the time has come for Republicans to put forth a responsible spending bill to avert a very costly government shutdown.

The Butler Bulldogs Return to the Final Four

After competing in last year's Final Four in Indianapolis, the Bulldogs team did the seemingly impossible in returning once again to compete in this year's NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. Basketball in the great Hoosier state has a long and celebrated history, and this Butler team has ushered in yet another remarkable new chapter of basketball excellence in Indiana. I offer my congratulations to the members of the team, Coach Stevens and the entire coaching staff for their phenomenal performance during this year's tournament.
