Green Jobs Project

On Friday, I joined General Services Agency (GSA) Administrator Martha Johnson at the Major General Emmett J. Bean Federal Center in Lawrence, IN to highlight a nearly $37 million investment that will create new jobs and generate savings through clean energy technology. More than 6,000 solar panels, producing over 1.4 megawatts of electricity, will be installed at the center. This project is even more rewarding because it is not just creating jobs - it's creating green jobs. The installation of solar panels will both reduce the center's dependence on non-renewable energy sources and save taxpayers money. The project will also be a proving ground for emerging technology companies operating in the Midwest.

New Reports Shows the Benefits of Health Care

Two studies recently released highlight the huge benefits that Americans will see from the new health care reform law. The first report from the Kaiser Family Foundation looks at the cost benefit for states with the upcoming federally funded-expansion of Medicaid. The report points out that while states will take on some additional costs, the benefit of having tens of thousands of people gain access to quality health insurance will deliver savings in the years and decades ahead that make the new law a good financial deal for states, including Indiana. To view the full report click here.

Families USA also released a report underscoring the essential protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions included in the health reform law. According to the report, if the new health reform law was not in place, 57 million Americans with pre-existing conditions under the age of 65 would be at risk of being denied coverage by health insurance companies. The new law puts an end to this unfair and discriminatory practice, which allowed health insurance companies to cherry-pick the healthiest beneficiaries while denying coverage to individuals who need coverage the most. The Impact of American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act on Veterans

Last week, the House passed the American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act. In addition to creating jobs and stimulating the economy, this legislation also takes a significant step toward ending the "Disabled Veterans Tax." This legislation, which must be approved by the Senate, would ensure disabled Veterans will no longer be forced to sacrifice their pensions in order to collect disability pay. Veterans who have been forced to retire due to being severely injured in service to our country, regardless of the length of time spent in the Armed Services, deserve full retirement and disability benefits.
