Report: GOP Budget Plan Will Cost Seniors
This week, the non-partisan Kaiser Family Foundation released a detailed analysis of how seniors would be impacted by the Ryan Budget. It concludes that the Ryan Budget, authored by Congressman Paul Ryan and enthusiastically endorsed by Republican leadership, would increase the cost of Medicare, while significantly reducing access to medical care.
Here in Central Indiana, the Ryan Plan would cause 89,000 seniors to be denied more than $400 million in health care services. While insisting upon preserving tax breaks for oil companies, the Ryan Budget asks seniors to pay more and get less. Under the Ryan Plan, seniors in Central Indiana would be required to pay nearly $60 million for their prescription drugs. I want seniors to know that I will not support any budget proposals that purports to balance the budget by imposing hardships on those who can least afford it.
I encourage you to read the Kaiser Family Foundation's report here. To learn more about my efforts to improve access to health care for all Americans, click here.
Conversation with Israeli Consul General Roey Gilad
I had the pleasure this week of sitting down with Roey Gilad, the Israeli Consul General based in Chicago. We had the opportunity to discuss the issues currently facing the Middle East and America's role in that part of the world. It is essential that the United States continue to work closely with Israel, mediate conflicts, and advocate for a stable, lasting peace that will advance the welfare and security of all in the region.
Continued Signs of Economic Recovery
Last month's Jobs Report revealed that the unemployment rate had dropped to its lowest level since January 2009. This week, it was reported that new home construction is at the highest level in four years. It is yet another sign that our economy is on the road to recovery. Of course, there are still far too many Americans looking for work. Rest assured, I will continue to reach out across the aisle to find common sense solutions that encourage job creation.
