Republicans Make Dangerous Cuts to Vital Health Services
Today, House Republicans forced through H.R. 4628, a bill that undermines bipartisan efforts to prevent the doubling of student loan interest rates for nearly 7.4 million Americans. Rather than addressing the issue with common sense and collaboration, my Republican colleagues offered a bill that makes dangerous cuts to women's and children's health services, while protecting big oil interests.
House Democrats had introduced an alternative bill which would have blocked the increase of student loan interest rates without cutting funding for breast and cancer screenings, childhood immunizations, diabetes prevention, and initiatives to reduce birth defects in newborns. But Republicans weren't interested.
If Republicans do not cease the political games, nearly 300,000 Hoosiers will see their interest rates double in July. I voted against this bill, today, because I will not support efforts that pit Hoosiers' access to health care against their financial well-being.
I am committed to keeping student loan interest rates down and ensuring that college is affordable for America's middle class, but the cutting of billions in vital health care funding is simply unconscionable.
Ball State University Goes Geothermal
This week, President Jo Ann Gora of Ball State University (BSU) visited my office in D.C. to discuss the university's large scale, ground-source geothermal energy system. The innovation, which is now halfway to completion, will allow Ball State to heat and cool its campus through the use of the Earth's groundwater and natural temperature. The revolutionary project will produce $2 million in annual energy savings for the university and cut its carbon footprint by half.
By remaining focused on clean energy, BSU has become a national leader in innovative conservation technologies, saving taxpayers money and creating hundreds of manufacturing and construction jobs. I am proud to see educators in Indiana taking such a serious step toward sustainability.
IUPUI's Daniel Popoola Represents State of Indiana at 16th Annual Posters on the Hill Event in D.C.
Congratulations to IUPUI's Daniel Popoola, a senior biology student in the School of Science, for being selected to showcase his research at the 16th annual Posters on the Hill session in Washington, D.C. Daniel, the only student from Indiana, joined 73 other undergraduate students from across the country to participate in the April 24th event. More than 850 student researchers applied for the program.
I enjoyed visiting with Daniel and hearing about how his research on the effects of nicotine on alcohol intake in rodents could have major implications for alcohol consumption studies involving humans.
