Revitalizing Lugar Tower and Breaking Ground on the "The Braxton"

This week I joined the Indianapolis Housing Agency (IHA) and local officials to break ground on a $30 million project to revitalize Lugar Tower located in downtown Indianapolis. The renovation, which is funded in part with federal dollars from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will include a brand new mixed-use, mixed-income development at the tower's base. Lugar Tower, which is currently home to approximately 200 low-income elderly and disabled residents, has seen little investment since its construction in 1974. The upgraded Lugar Tower will be joined by a newly constructed apartment building to be named "The Braxton at Lugar Tower" in honor of Robert Braxton, who served as one of Indianapolis' first African-American firemen. This development will feature 74 one- and two-bedroom units priced for residents with low and moderate incomes. This project will create 400 jobs for Hoosiers and increase the amount of affordable housing in downtown Indianapolis.

45th Anniversary of Medicare

Forty-five years ago, millions of Americans and nearly half of all seniors were unable to afford basic health care coverage. In recognition of this urgent need, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare into law and one year later, on July 1, 1966, the first enrollees entered the program.

Today, Medicare provides over 47 million Americans with dependable medical insurance and serves as the largest health care provider in our nation. Despite this success, Republicans in Congress are attempting to dismantle in the current program in exchange for vouchers that seniors would use to buy private insurance. This plan burdens seniors with less coverage and higher costs.

Medicare is not simply an entitlement program that starts at age 65 -- it is earned over a lifetime. It is a promise that has been forged with all Americans. After working their whole lives and contributing to the economy and their communities, Americans deserve access to reliable medical coverage. We must ensure that this sacred trust between America and its citizens remains as strong as ever.
