Saluting those who Serve our Nation
Over the weekend, I was honored to celebrate Veterans Day by helping kick off the inaugural Julia Carson Legacy of Love Foundation Food Drive, benefitting the Hoosier Veterans Assistance Fund (HVAF). The event also paid tribute to the Montford Point Marines, all of whom received the 2011 Congressional Gold Medal. Each year, it is my esteemed privilege to join my fellow Hoosiers in honoring those who have served so bravely in our nation's armed forces. Veterans Day is an opportunity to reflect on the courage and dedication of those who put themselves in harm's way to protect American lives and the values we hold dear. The debt that we owe to them is immeasurable.
As more men and women return home from Iraq and Afghanistan, we must ensure that our commitment to these Veterans and their families stretches far beyond a single day of recognition. We must ensure that our veterans are able to smoothly transition back to civilian life. That's why I strongly supported the Vow to Hire Heroes Act, which provided incentives for businesses to hire service members and unlocked funding for additional job training. It is also why I was proud to author, and have signed by the President, two bills that empower our service members during deployment and when they return home.
I am honored to be an advocate for these men and women, and I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to support programs that help our veterans stay in their homes, pursue higher education, receive quality and timely health care, and participate in training for good paying jobs in the civilian workforce.

Uniting in the Face of Disaster
Last weekend, a devastating explosion on the city's Southeast side claimed the lives of two people, damaged dozens of homes and forced over 200 residences to flee their neighborhood. My thoughts and prayers go out to those Hoosiers affected by this tragedy, and my office stands ready to assist in any way we can as the community rebuilds.
On behalf of all those in the 7th District, I want to express my deepest condolences to those who have lost so much because of this terrible disaster. But even in the face tragedy, our community stands together. I am grateful for the first responders, as well as the tremendous city-wide effort to help families recover. It is a testament to the character of our city and the many families that call it home.
Returning to Work: Finishing the To-Do List
I returned to Washington this week to finish work on a number of key issues facing our nation, the most pressing of which is the impending fiscal cliff. Americans have made clear that they support a balanced plan to deficit reduction - one that protects our working families and asks the most fortunate among us to pay their fair share.
It is time to get this job done, and I'm hopeful Republicans and Democrats will come together as we tackle these challenges.
To share your opinion on the fiscal cliff, please email us at CarsonBeHeard@mail.house.gov .
