REMARKS BY
THE HONORABLE ANDRÉ CARSON
FLOOR STATEMENT ON AUTOMAKERS BRIDGE LOANS
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2008

Mr. Speaker, right now our nation is in the midst of a severe Category 5 financial storm.  The economic hardships associated with this financial hurricane have been harsh.

Millions of working Americans are filing for unemployment.  Thousands of American companies are shutting down.  And those fortunate enough to find work often find themselves under-employed.

So in light of our current financial predicament, now is not the time for Congress to be passive.  And with over 3 million American jobs at risk, now certainly is not the time for Congress to be unresponsive.

By voting in favor of this bridge loan, we are responsibly seeking to secure the jobs of hardworking Americans.  By supporting this bill we are attempting to safeguard one of our nation's most treasured industries.

I encourage my colleagues to vote in favor of the Auto Industry Financing and Restructuring Act.

Thank you Mr. Speaker and I yield back the balance of my time.
