Super Bowl 46 and the 7th District
I would like congratulate the City of Indianapolis and the New York Giants for an outstanding Super Bowl performance. Last Sunday, the Giants once again beat the fiercest rival of our beloved Colts - the New England Patriots - in a game that went down to the wire.
But the true champions of Super Bowl 46 are the members of the Host Committee (led ably by Chair Mark Miles and CEO Allison Melangton), countless community organizations, good corporate citizens, committed public leaders, and the thousands of volunteers who worked together to make this the most successful Super Bowl ever. Over one million fans experienced Hoosier hospitality at its very finest, and our city got rave reviews, like those seen here, here, here, and here . After last week, Indianapolis will no longer be the nation's "best kept secret." I have no doubt that our efforts at showcasing the city will pay off. This past weekend, our city's Convention and Visitors Association made the most of its opportunity to showcase downtown Indianapolis by hosting 29 key decision-makers with the authority to book a staggering $1.5 billion in convention business. Attracting such business would be an enormous boon to our restaurants as well as our hospitality and retail industries.
The impact of Super Bowl 46 extends far beyond Lucas Oil Stadium, the downtown area, and the hospitality industry. With the support of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and corporate and community partners like Chase Bank, Rebuild Together, Indianapolis revitalized one of its hardest hit neighborhoods.
Indianapolis's Near Eastside—a patchwork of neighborhoods just outside of downtown—led the nation in foreclosures and had been plagued by violent crime for years. Thanks to relentless efforts by community residents, the Near Eastside has been rejuvenated. Housing developments like the St. Clair Senior Apartments and Commonwealth Apartments and community centers like the Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center have given this once blighted area new hope. The dramatic turnaround of the Near Eastside will be particularly beneficial for seniors and low-income families. The Near Eastside redevelopment effort serves as a model, not only for what can be achieved throughout Indianapolis, but across this country. Our success in organizing Super Bowl 46 provides conclusive proof that Indianapolis with its top-notch facilities is a prime destination for conventions and large national and international events. Once again, I want to congratulate all those who worked so hard to make this Super Bowl such a tremendous success.
I also want to thank Joanne Horak, a breast cancer survivor, who spent countless hours to knit me a fantastic scarf in the Indianapolis Colts' colors of blue and white. I wore it with pride at Super Bowl 46.
Lastly, I want to thanks those who gave generously to the Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center:

Supporting the Passage of the STOCK Act
I am a strong proponent of fair play. Unfortunately, under existing law, Members of Congress are allowed to gain an unfair advantage in the stock market because insider trading laws are not enforced strongly enough to prohibit them from using non-public information obtained during briefings and hearings for financial gain. This is unacceptable, which is why I cosponsored, and this week voted for, the STOCK ACT, which will prohibit Members of Congress, their staff, and other federal employees from trading stocks, bonds, and other financial instruments based on information they receive in the course of their jobs.
Corporal Cory Smith is Back Home Again in Indiana
Yesterday, Corporal Cory Smith, a U.S. Army ranger, completed his amazing 565-mile run from Georgia to our Monument Circle. Corporal Smith undertook the run to highlight the difficulties many service members have in transitioning back to civilian life. With the cheers and accompaniment of family, friends, well-wishers, and veterans, Corporal Smith arrived on Monument Circle where he received special proclamation from the City of Indianapolis as well as a Congressional Recognition from my office. A few weeks ago, I was honored to have Corporal Smith accept my invitation to attend the President's State of the Union. Corporal Smith raised money on behalf of A Gallant Few, a nonprofit organization which helps veterans. I want to express my gratitude to Corporal Smith for his service to his country and for his dedication to service men and women all across this great nation. Welcome home to "the Running Ranger!"
