Suspending Extravagant Executive Pay and Bonuses

This week, I voted in the House Financial Services Committee to rein in excessive executive pay and bonuses at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. At the outset of the financial crisis in the fall of 2008, American taxpayers provided billions to prevent these languishing mortgage giants from falling into insolvency. Disappointingly, an estimated $100 million that could have been used to prevent the further collapse of the U.S. housing market was diverted for the purpose of executive compensation and bonuses. While I fully recognize that Fannie and Freddie remain instrumental in addressing our home mortgage crisis and need to continue to attract talented and competent individuals, I believe this to be an abuse of American tax dollars.

Getting Veterans Back to Work

This week I joined my colleagues in the House to honor our veterans by passing the VOW to Hire Heroes Act, which will boost employment opportunities for those who have bravely served our nation. Far too many veterans coming home from Afghanistan and Iraq return to find their job opportunities are limited. The VOW to Hire Heroes Act provides thousands of dollars in tax credits to encourage employers to hire veterans and expands education and training opportunities. Importantly, the VOW to Heroes Act is fully paid for. Thousands of unemployed veterans simply could not wait any longer.

Celebrating American Education Week

This week, communities across the nation are celebrating American Education Week. For ninety years, American Education Week has served to honor the hard work of students, recognize the professionalism and dedication of our teachers and support staff, and give thanks to parents and members of the community who help students succeed. American Education Week also provides an opportunity for our community to recommit itself to providing a high quality public education for every student. I remain committed to the notion every American student, with the proper education and motivation, can achieve the American Dream.
