____________________________________________________________________________________ Thousands Gather for 3rd Annual Central Indiana Job Fair Despite our economic recovery, far too many Hoosiers are still looking for work and are struggling to make ends meet. That's why, on Tuesday, I hosted my 3rd Annual Central Indiana Job Fair in cooperation with Ivy Tech Corporate College. This year's fair, held at Ivy Tech's Illinois Fall Creek Center, included 75 employers offering more than 1,000 available positions. Ivy Tech and WorkOne also provided resume review and interview assistance for those looking to hone their job-seeking skills. More than 2,000 participants took advantage of this annual event, and some even walked away with a new job in hand. The Central Indiana Job Fair serves as a fine example of how members of Congress and other elected officials can enhance job recruitment opportunities by providing a forum for good corporate citizens looking to hire motivated and talented individuals. Kicking Off the Small Business Development Series This week kicked off the Carson Small Business Development Series at the Eastside Business Association. I was thrilled to have 50 small business owners from all across Indianapolis in attendance to discuss ways that local businesses can take advantage of the vast resources of the Small Business Administration and the expertise of its dedicated staff. Small businesses remain an essential driver of job creation in Indiana and in many states across the U.S. I am confident that meetings like this one and the events to come will serve as an invaluable resource for local entrepreneurs and help to fuel economic growth. Celebrating the Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act Forty-seven years ago, President Lyndon Baines Johnson signed into law the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to protect the right to vote for all Americans. It remains one of the signature achievements of the Civil Rights Movement and an essential mechanism against discrimination. Regrettably, dozens of states, including Indiana, have enacted laws imposing burdensome and cost-prohibitive identification requirements that discourage participation in the electoral process. These voting restrictions discourage voter turnout, particularly low-income individuals, those serving in the military, minorities and the elderly. In celebrating the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, my hope is that it strengthens our resolve to support efforts that promote equal access to the polls for all law-abiding Americans. Potential Compensation for Faulty Foreclosures Many homeowners have faced financial difficulty as a result of our economic downturn. While we have seen marked improvement, many Americans are still "underwater"—that is, the value of their homes is worth less than the money owed on their mortgage, and millions lost their homes to foreclosure when they could no longer afford their payments. The Department of Justice and other federal regulators, in cooperation with 49 state attorney generals—including Indiana's—have announced that a settlement has been reached with five of the largest mortgage servicers for mistakes, misrepresentations and other inappropriate conduct involving foreclosures finalized in 2009 and 2010. Borrowers may be eligible for up to $125,000 in cash or other compensation due to the mishandling of their loan and subsequent foreclosure. Regrettably, only about 5% of eligible borrowers have applied. To ensure that borrowers receive the assistance they deserve, I have advocated for extending the deadline and pushed for efforts to ensure adequate participation. The deadline for eligible borrowers to apply is December 31, 2012. I want to reassure all eligible borrowers that their settlement application will not disrupt any modification you have already applied for or received.
