Withdrawing Troops from Iraq

This week, President Obama announced the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq by year's end. I commend the President's leadership on this issue. I believe this is the right decision at the right time. He has followed through on his commitment to wind down the war while maintaining a comprehensive strategy to dismantle terrorist organizations and protect the American public. After eight-years of combat and peacekeeping efforts, the Iraqi people are ready to secure their own country. It is time for us to focus on our challenges here at home

As we continue to focus on tracking down al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations who would do America harm, I want to give thanks to all who served in Iraq and acknowledge the sacrifices of the tens of thousands who were wounded and the 4,400 Americans who lost their lives, including over one hundred Hoosiers. We must all work together to fulfill our commitment to those who have bravely served, honor their memories, and support their families.

Working with the Red Cross to Wish a Happy Holidays to Wounded Veterans

In 2007, Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. asked the American Red Cross for help distributing thousands of holiday cards to wounded troops. Recently, the Red Cross has sought to expand the project, now officially known as Holiday Mail for Heroes, to reach members of our Armed Forces at other facilities. Now in its fifth year, Americans including Members of Congress have the opportunity to extend holiday greetings and give thanks to service members, veterans and their families worldwide.

Next Wednesday, alongside many of my colleagues in the House, I will be attending a Holiday Mail for Heroes card signing event in the Rayburn House Office Building. I applaud the Red Cross and Pitney Bowes for their leadership in expanding this wonderful program.

We owe our soldiers our support. For more information about how you can participate in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program, click here.

Remembering Dan Wheldon

This week, I paid tribute to Indy Car driver, Dan Wheldon, who tragically died while competing in the Las Vegas 300. Having been named Rookie of the Year in 2003 and winning the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2005 and 2011, Wheldon served as an incredible ambassador for the Indy Racing League. I offer my sincere condolences to his wife, family, and race fans around the world. I am confident Dan Wheldon's memory will remain in the hearts of race fans everywhere.
