Washington, DC -- Congressman André Carson (IN-07), one of three Muslims serving in the United States Congress, released the following statement marking the beginning of Ramadan:


Mr. Speaker, I am proud, as the longest serving Muslim in Congress, to in- troduce legislation to recognize the com- mencement of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting and spiritual renewal, and wish Muslims around the world a Ramadan Mubarak!


Mr. CARSON. Mr. Speaker, today I rise to acknowledge a fellow Midwesterner and former colleague from the state of Michigan, Bob Carr, on his 80th birthday. Bob has spent a lifetime in public service and education and continues to have a lasting impact on our insti- tution.


Mr. Speaker, today I am re- introducing the Emerging Business Encouragement Act which will give new small businesses a more equal playing field to secure federal contracts.
