WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman André Carson recently spoke on the House Floor in support of H.R. 5818, the Neighborhood Stabilization Act of 2008. H.R. 5818 passed in the House today by a 239 to 188 vote margin. Below are Congressman Carson's remarks:

Madam Speaker:

I rise today in strong support of HR 5818, the Neighborhood Stabilization Act of 2008. This bill is extremely important to me as a Representative from Indiana's Seventh Congressional District.  My district has suffered with disproportionately high rates of foreclosures.  In fact, Indiana has consistently rated among the top 10 states nationally for foreclosures along with Michigan and Ohio.

Indianapolis, IN – Congressman André Carson and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer will meet with local veterans in Indianapolis on Friday, May 2. In the meeting, Congressman Carson will discuss legislation that will help provide additional resources and support for our nation's veterans.

Hoyer and Carson will take questions from members of the media. One of the most powerful members of Congress, Hoyer is charged with scheduling legislation for consideration on the House Floor as well as building unity among House Democrats. Details regarding the meeting are included below.


Mr. CARSON of Indiana. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to bring attention to an issue of great concern to the people of my district. When I was home in Indianapolis this weekend I heard from countless homeowners who are concerned about losing their homes and the mortgage crisis. These are good, hardworking people, not speculators or investors, who find themselves on the brink of foreclosure. And the Hoosiers I met aren't alone. Some estimate that nearly 50,000 homes in Indiana will be lost to this crisis if we fail to act.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman André Carson, a member of the House Financial Services Committee, released the following statement today after Federal Reserve Chairman, Ben Bernanke, announced the lowering of federal interest rates. This is the seventh reduction in the federal funds rate since last September.

"With the housing crisis and credit crunch hurting American workers and hindering economic progress, I am hopeful that the lowering of federal interest rates will help those struggling to make ends meet.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Congressman André Carson released the following statement today regarding the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to uphold an Indiana voting identification law that requires voters to produce photo identification when going to the polls to cast their ballots:

"The U.S. Supreme Court's decision to uphold a biased law that disenfranchises both minority and elderly voters is alarming and contradicts the tenets of our nation's representative democracy. More laws need to be put in place that turnout the vote rather than discriminatorily suppress it."

Indianapolis, IN – Today, Congressman André Carson will address Amtrak workers who will be picketing at a rally at the State Capitol on the Market Street steps. The rally will start at 12 noon and Congressman Carson is expected to address the crowd shortly after the rally begins.
